Introduction

The EWAP programme offers small and large grants to document wooden architecture that is endangered because of neglect, conflict or environmental circumstances. Documentation may involve a combination of methods, such as digital outputs (images generated by point cloud, photogrammetric images, scaled ortho-images, 3D models), drawings (sketches, measured, technical), plans, sections and elevations, photographs, videos, maps, oral histories and other forms of written documentation. EWAP will favour projects in parts of the world where documentation has been less developed and funding support is more difficult to obtain. Thus, projects in Western Europe, Japan, the United States and Canada will not be funded at this time. 

The programme will also support the documentation of bamboo, palm, reed or grass traditions if a strong case for their at risk status can be made. These grants are not for conservation or restoration work. 

For 2023 the following grants will be offered:

1. Small grants can last up to one year with a maximum award of £30,000.

2. Medium grants should be between 12-18 months with a maximum award of £80,000, part of this grant is intended to cover equipment for 3D documentation.

Applications

The grant application process comprises two stages: 

1. an Expression of Interest (EOI) 

2. a Full Application. 

EOI’s provide an outline of the proposed project and make a case for the endangered status of the structure(s). Projects that meet the criteria for EWAP funding are then invited to submit a Full Application, which provides a detailed description of the project methodology and a breakdown of the budget. Full Applications are reviewed by expert peer reviewers and subsequently ranked by the EWAP Advisory Panel.
